After driving through the desert from San Diego on the coast in California
I arrived at Yuma Arizona (which is basically on the border with
Mexico) to find a little greenery on the banks of the once mighty Colorado
River (photo on the right), its not real big now, as it is a bit
like the Murray River in Australia, the irrigation from it takes most of
the water.
I arrived at the Lumber yard to meet the lumber lady, Judith
Mattard, a very nice lady who has some very unique woods and after dealing
with her I can safely say she is one of the few wood merchants I have met
that you could trust. The gentleman beside Judy is Kenny, a clever fellow that
can solve any problem you come up against. He was helping me cut up
some snakewood and I made the comment that he was a lateral thinker, and
his reply made me laugh. He said, "I was pretty much used to fitting
10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound box." That sums Kenny up - he is one
of the good guys.
The next photo is what greeted me at the lumber yard. A tense moment as
you don't know what you are looking at as far as quality goes.
There were a few cracks on the outside of the logs, but that is to be
expected. After rolling the logs around the figure on the outside looked
good which is promising. I was feeling confident, the lumber
lady had come through with the goods.
Kenny sharpened the chain saw up and I cut a log into the sizes I could
manage on the bandsaw. A smile came to my face when I saw the
bomb burst figure on the end grain, this was looking good.
The next photo is what I found when I cut some of the wood up on the
band saw. It doesn't get much better than this. I
purchased the 4 larger logs shown in the third photo and they all contain
figure like this. I can't wait to make some planes out of this wood.
Thanks Judy & Co
