This photo shows a 1" Shoulder plane used in conjunction with a shooting board to clean up the face of a tenon for fitting to the mortise. The shoulder plane is purpose built for this task and it is very efficient at removing wood across the grain and getting right into the corners for a neat fitting joint.

After cleaning up the face of the tenon, the
shoulder plane is laid on its side to to clean up the shoulder of the tenon. Once again this tool is intended for this use and will produce a crisp clean square edge ensuring a perfect looking mortise and tenon joint. A must have tool for doing successful mortise and tenon joints.
