RECOMMENDED HAND GRIP

FOR SHOULDER PLANE

Hold the plane with the corner of the top rear of the plane resting comfortably in the center of the palm of your hand. Use your other hand as a guide for the front of the plane. Note: you can use your first two fingers like a fence for forming rebates at a certain distance from the edge of a piece of wood.

A close up view of how you use your fingers as a fence to form a rebate.  Holding the plane this way is also very good for controlling the plane.

If you are using the plane one handed you will need to put one finger on the top of the plane in front of the blade to add some weight to the front of the plane when starting your cut.  At the same time the top back corner of the plane needs to fit in the palm of your hand so you have the power to push it.  This is the grip I use when cleaning up a tenon where I am holding the wood in a shooting board.

If you have small hands and you can't keep the corner of the plane in the palm of your hand while having one finger in front of the blade as shown, planes can be shortened in length to ensure the correct grip. Contact us if this is as issue for you.

When I use a shoulder plane to clean up the shoulder of a tenon I lay the plane on its side as shown in the photo.

Please Note: The above pictures are only recommended ways of holding this style of plane. You may have your own way of doing it which is just as good. The way that gives you the best results is the best way.
